about therapists
Education - A qualified therapist should have both education and experience. The education and licensing for massage therapists varies from state to state.
Florida requires that all therapists receive 500 hours of training
at a board approved massage school, plus pass a national examination
for licensure. School curriculum includes anatomy/physiology courses, training in Swedish massage and a variety of other techniques, Hydrotherapy, state laws, and HIV/AIDS education.
Therapists are expected to
receive continuing education credits every two years to keep their
license active.
Role of Therapists - The goal of any good therapist should be to help their clients feel better. They are not doctors and cannot diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medications. They cannot perform spinal adjustments. Their only abilities are to massage the soft-tissues of the body for the purposes of relaxation and therapy. If a therapist works in an establishment, or has a private office, they are regulated as other businesses and required to provide clean and adequate facilities for their clients. Therefore, as a client, you should look for therapists that behave professionally and who make you feel comfortable.
To find out more about laws concerning therapists, investigate or report a specific therapist, or to find out any other information regarding massage, it would be advised to contact your local or state Department of
Health and/or Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
Choosing a
Therapist - To find a qualified practitioner you must first decide what kind of therapy you need. Some therapists focus on therapeutic massage, while others focus completely on stress reduction. Since most therapists practice Swedish massage or integrated techniques, a massage will focus on both therapy and relaxation. Take into consideration whether you have had any recent or past injuries or medical conditions that are affecting you physically, or if you are stressed and need to relax.
It is important to disclose the reasons you need the massage, such as injury or medical condition, as well as, your objectives and expectations in your initial discussion with the therapist. Communication is the best way to ensure your treatment goals will be met.
